The people in the Three-body World
"Three-Body* is a well-known sci-fi, especially in the Chinese world, by Liu Cixin. It won the Nebula prize in 2014 and the Hugo prize in 2015, the first Chinese sci-fi that won worldwide prizes.
However, when I first read this novel in 2014, I can't even finish it. The story started with a tragic “criticize and struggle demonstration" targeting the heroine Ye Wenjie. As a child of a "class enemy", she'd been abandoned and betrayed. So when she received a message from the three-body world, warning her not to respond by exposing the Earth's position in the universe, it was natural that she responded with a welcome message, hoping that the world can redeem the corrupted humanity on the Earth.
A wonderful start. In my opinion, this is why the novel won its reputation in the Western world: the first sci-fi talking about the Culture Revolution, which like many other political tragedies, was erased intentionally by the ruling party in this country.
However, the following plot shocked me completely: dozens of famous scientists committed suicide in recent years, because they found that mysterious particles "locked in" scientific exploration by changing the fundamental physical laws.
When reading this the first time, I didn't find things too weird. However, the collapse of scientists produces a profound result, as high-tech development is infeasible, politicians and armies took over the duty of preventing the Earth colonized by the fleets from the three-body world.
Mr. Liu once said he is a tech nerd. But the above plots show that deep inside the tech straight man's appearance, he has actually no idea about what is science, and what are scientists.
If scientists found that the fundamental physics laws are changed by some mysterious particles, what in their hearts is not depression, but excitation. In history, there were a few scientists who committed suicide for the future of their careers, but they were obviously not the mainstream of the science community.
P.S.: Gotten a fever for Covid-19, just some much for today. I'll come back to this topic later if you like it.
